It's in the mail

The nursing student in me cries to get up from the computer, but the creative monster in me can't stop typing.

The Dastardly Distractions of A&E

Being off of both work and school for a week over Christmas holidays has led me to an interesting discovery. I will state "I am going to clean today" more times than I will actually clean anything. I was genuinely motivated to clean my apartment this week but then I realized the unrelenting distraction that is A&E.

I have watched A&E from time to time, but never with too much interest. Now... now I have discovered American Justice and Cold Case files from 10am - 12pm.

I filled my sink with hot water and suds, and cleaned dishes during the commercials. Yes, it took longer than necessary, but I had to know if Cynthia George was impicated at all in the murder Jeff Zack! Did she get her other lover John Zaffino to pull the trigger? Did she pay for his wicked fast motorcycle he may have used in the murder? By the end of the show I felt the jury didn't have enough evidence to convict John Zaffino but they did. Shows what I know. The Akron cops couldn't get Cynthia George though... Until 2005! She was convicted!!!

Then! On Cold Case files there was a serial killer who literally left his calling card at the crime scene! He dropped his business cards at one of the body dump sites... but he got away because of lack of evidence tying him directly to the murder itself. Until 1999! A policeman looked at unsolved murders in his spare time and realized that this murder had DNA evidence attached but 25 years earlier they had no way to test! So he tested against the guy with the cards and BAM! Case solved! LOVE IT!

Wow... I wonder how much cleaning I could have gotten done instead of blogging...

Second Chances

A girl about my age or younger was panhandling on the little island on Upper James at the Mohawk lights tonight. It is -11 now, and I don't know what it was three hours ago though. She was holding a cardboard sign that said "Broke and Hungry, anything helps."

She was walking up and down the island wearing a short winter coat, tight black jeans, a sweatshirt with a hood, and gloves. No make up that I could see, but it was about 6pm so quite dark.

She stopped at the van in front of me and received a pair of black winter gloves. She said thank you and gratefully shoved them into her pocket. My car was next, so I quickly rolled down my window and emptied my ashtray of all of its change.

I didn't know I had a loonie and toonie in there, let alone a bunch of quarters! She held out her hand and I put the money in her gloved palm. We smiled at eachother which was nice, and I told her to stay warm and good luck. She thanked me and quickly got out of the way as the light changed.

I waved to her as my window went up and I came home and ate my pizza.

I have to wonder where she is going to sleep. Again, it is -11 and I don't know if there was any body fat on her. I hope more people give her gloves and scarves and a hat!

One thing I have learned through being a nursing student is the fact that no one has the power. You can tell the people who think they do. They might say things all that person is going to do is spend that money on booze, or that person is faking their pain to get drugs.

It doesn't matter. I don't think anyone has the right to withhold things from people.

Don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting people go out and start giving hundreds of dollars to winos on the streets... I just don't think we have the right to judge. We don't know why or how they ended up where they are do we?

A Moment

Every now and then people can have a zen moment right? Or a moment of utter humiliation? Triumph? Fear? Joy? The list goes on...

The thing about most things on this list is that there is no gray area between the hard and the easy right? Zen is generally something easy to experience... it's welcome. Same thing with joy, triumph, celebration, personal glory, etc, etc. The hard category contains humiliation, fear, failure, sadness, etc.

There is one moment that falls in the grayest of areas. The moment where you are completely humbled. You can't claim it's easy to be humbled, but at the same time, it's something you can easily find where you least expect it.

I went into good old Pet Valu in Dundas for cat food. There was a man outside who asked me for change. I always joke that I am close to living on the street, but obviously, no one that knows me would let that happen. I had no change. I did not lie to this man when I said no. I had no change. I was buying my hugely expensive cat food on my debit card. So I said "sorry no I don't." and continued into the store. I have to admit, I was quite shocked by the fact that someone was panhandling in Dundas. I have never seen that in that town. When I left PetValu the man was still there. He was older. Wearing red flannel and dark green overalls. He was grizzled looking to say the least. I thought to myself "buddy, I can't imagine you are going to get much change here!"

Then a man passed him. He was a non-descript younger gentleman. I would say in his mid thirties. The older man held out his hand and asked for change. (I was slowly climbing into my car by this point). The younger man shook his head and before I could mentally form the words "that's what I thought!" the younger man put a hand on the man's shoulder and said "But I am going for a coffee, would you like to join me?" I honestly stood half in and half out of my car. The older man nodded and the two of them walked into Tim Horton's together.

So I drive home thinking "Wow, that man was awesome." If I had had change would I have given it to him? Probably not. No, no I wouldn't have.

Then I get home and Oprah is on. Ellen Burstyn is on and she tells a story about how she lived on the streets of New York just to see what it was like. I don't know why... But she took no money with her, and dressed appropriately for her task. She needed money to ride the subway so she approached two women about the same age as herself and asked for a dollar. One woman fished in her purse and handed over a one dollar bill. Ellen told Oprah she was thrilled to have that dollar. She felt proud of herself. But as she walked away she realized neither of the women would look her in the eyes. She cried when she realized homeless people and panhandlers are seen as lower, almost insignificant, human beings. I understood I hadn't looked at the older gentleman in the eyes. I didn't want to.

Very, very humbling esperience to say the least.
